Search Sites

Some search sites let you click through topical directories; others let you enter search terms; while still others let you do both. A few sites are meta-search sites -- they submit your search query to multiple search engines at the same time. Try several search sites and decide which of them works best for you!

How To Choose A Search Engine Engine Or Directory - Contains a list of many, many search engines and directories, categorized for the types of information you might want to find. For example, if you want to search for audio/music, use these search engines; if you want to search for information in Usenet newsgroups, use these search engines, etc.

Iliad - A fast, free, easy-to-use Web searching service, developed by NASA, for blind and sight-impaired Web users, whose Web software cannot verbally interpret the graphics found on most Web sites. Here's how it works: A user sends an email message to Iliad, specifying what keywords they want it to use to conduct a Web search. Iliad submits the keywords to multiple search engines on the Web, and strips the graphics and other non-text coding out of the search results. Usually within 15 to 30 minutes, Iliad will send an email message back to the user that presents the requested information in a text-based format that can be read by reader software, enlarged on the screen, or even printed in braille by the user. To receive instructions for using Iliad, send an email message to iliad@msstate.edu or to iliad@prime.jsc.nasa.gov or to iliad@rosy.tenet.edu. Leave the Subject of the message blank, and put the words start iliad in the body of the message. You will receive an email response containing step-by-step instructions on how to use Iliad. Search Engine Watch - Tons of useful information, including Web searching tips, links to many popular search engines, search engine submission tips for Webmasters, reviews and tests of search sites, and a search engine newsletter.

WebHelp - A fast, free, searching service that lets you send a question to a live person, who then searches the Internet and finds the answer for you, usually within a few minutes. (Thanks, trak1der!)
